Festival: the other the self #3

theothertheself_03_w-dragged-199x282Komende zaterdag en zondag, 4 – 5 juni, vindt de derde editie van het festival the other the self plaats in Brussel. Performances, talks en lezingen zetten de thema’s gender, stem, taal en identiteit in de kijker. Het programma omvat niet alleen een focus op de vervlechting van deze begrippen, maar ook op de artistieke vertaalslag van geluidskunstenaars, muzikanten, onderzoekers en meer. Het publiek mag zich verwachten aan verrassende en verrijkende benaderingen van gender en haar actuele uitbeeldingen in de wereld van de experimentele muziek, kunst en aanverwante velden.

Middaglezing ‘Lokale werking van het Interfederaal Gelijkekansencentrum in Gent’

Op woensdag 21 april 2016 organiseert de Cel Diversiteit en Gender (UGent) een middaglezing (12u – 14u).

Sofie D’Hulster is werkzaam bij het Interfederaal Gelijkekansencentrum en verleent ze bijstand aan slachtoffers van racisme en discriminatie,  ontwikkelt ze een preventie- en voorlichtingsapparaat samen met diverse partners op het lokale terrein, en staat ze in voor adviezen en aanbevelingen ten aanzien van het beleid.

Uitnodiging Studiumlezing Frank Westerman

studium generale hogent gilly coeneVanuit Studium Generale wordt op dinsdag 12 april een Studiumlezing van Frank Westerman georganiseerd. De lezing start 20:00 in de Miry Concertzaal, Biezekapelstraat 9, 9000 Gent.

Schipbreukelingen op vreemde kust

Frank Westerman is een Nederlands journalist en schrijver. Zijn boeken verschijnen in verschillende talen en hij won reeds verscheidene prijzen, waaronder de Gouden Uil in 2005 voor El Negro en ik. Westerman licht al een tipje van de sluier op over zijn Studiumlezing:

‘Stel: je spoelt aan op vreemde kust – is het kompas van je identiteit dan op slag onklaar? Niet alleen de continenten zijn op drift, ook hun bewoners.’

In deze lezing geeft Frank Westerman zijn visie op identiteit en laat hij vragen aan bod komen die brandend actueel zijn: Welke identiteit krijgen de vluchtelingen van vandaag aangemeten wanneer ze in Europa aankomen? Hoeveel vat hebben ze daarop? Worden ze altijd als ‘de ander’ bestempeld? Worden ze altijd in de eerste plaats als vluchteling bekeken en wat doet dat met hun eigen individuele identiteit?

Deze lezing wordt mede mogelijk gemaakt dankzij boekhandel Limerick.

The number of girls and women choosing for an education or career in STEM (Science, Technology, Education and Mathematics) remains relatively low: only 20-30% of students are female. We (TEDxGhent & TechLadies Ghent) have invited some inspiring speakers, female as well as male ones, who are passionate about their field, to share their views on this observation and its potential future evolution.

Be inspired by Martine Tempels, Senior Vice President at Telenet, president of the STEM platform, who is promoting CoderDojo amongst young children. Get to know Francis wyffels, professor at Ghent University, who is enthusiastically organizing robot competitions around the world.  Get carried away by the personal story of Eva Degraeuwe, a student-entrepreneur whose team developed an app that can save lives. Research Fellow post, sexual violence at universities

The Department of Sociology, within the School of Law, Politics and Sociology, is looking to recruit to a temporary Research Fellow post in Gender. The person appointed will be part of the European Commission-funded project Universities Supporting Victims of Sexual Violence, which focuses on developing ‘first response’ training for university staff who may receive disclosures of sexual assault. The Research Fellow will be responsible for developing and supporting the delivery of a ‘first response’ training programme at Sussex, and for sharing the learning from this with our project partners across Europe. Applicants should be able to demonstrate evidence of high quality research engagement, experience of developing and using qualitative and quantitative methods, and a background in gender issues and knowledge of gender/feminist theory. The successful candidate will show commitment to the aims and success of the project and a willingness to contribute to the research culture of our dynamic, friendly department.
